Both players were consistent in their rallies, keeping the opposition guessing at the net with sublime drop shots. Kelli in particular played some very cheeky winners - good to see those soft hands in play!
Over on the other court, Gigi and Anna, in their debut match for Bagshot, took their first set easily (6-1) but the opposition played out long rallies, often using multiple lobs to keep the ball in play. Despite this, it was great to see a combination of Gigi’s baseline battle skills and Anna’s brilliant defensive play.
Then the heavens opened and dumped a lot of water on the clay, forcing a 20 min break to their match. Having been down at the start of the second set, the Foxhills ladies turned it around and won, meaning the score after the first rubber was 3-1 to Bagshot.
The second rubber was a challenge however. Having spent almost an hour off court in between their matches (waiting for the other pair to finish as well as a poorly timed power cut, meaning loss of the floodlights), Emily and Kelli’s next match was a frustrating game of cat and mouse. The opponents kept the ball high in the air but Kelli and Emily were ready to pounce at the net when given the chance. They finished overall with a set apiece.
Meanwhile, Gigi had taken a bad tumble and despite leading 5-2 in their second match, our ladies were forced to retire after losing their first set in the second rubber 7-5. Things didn't go quite according to plan though. I completely forgot how to do any successful shots which meant Simeon had to take the reins for the 2 sets. Unfortunately, we found ourselves at a loss 6-2, 6-4.

Things were looking slightly better on court 4 with Tony and Luke chasing the opposition all the way to tie break in the 1st set but just lost out at 7-5. in their 2nd set, all players were consistently on serve... apart from the one break which led to an overall loss of 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in the first half. Half time so we needed to regroup

2nd half: Simeon and I saw the strong serving opposition and spent a bit of time trying to figure out the best way to deal with them. It didn't take me long (with a bit of help from Jose) to realise serving to the backhand was a huge advantage. My shots also decided now was the time to actually work along with some volleying. That, along with Simeon smashing shot after shot from the baseline and knocking the other pair off guard, we ended up taking the 1st set 6-4. 2nd set wasn't much different. We kept the pressure on, both us volleying and lobbing to keep the oppo back. This one came down to one break of serve early on which gave us the 2nd set 6-4.

Meanwhile, on the other court, Tony & Luke were both working really well together and making very few mistakes. Some brilliant passing shots and volleying led to the taking the 1st set 6-2. It only got better from there with the same style of strength and shots ensuring no mistakes were made. Finally taking the 2nd set 6-2 as well.

Final result: Having been knocked back at 4-0 down in the 1st half, we really pulled out all the shouts to gain a very respectful 4-4 draw. Team captain Emily got very emotional watching them close the deal, after many months of training and working on their partnership. They threw everything they had at the game, a well deserved win. Conditions were sunny, ideal for a team photo (see attached). The opposition looked young fit but we were definitely up for the challenge. Teige and I played their first pair and it was clear from the onset we were in for a battle, the quality of their returns was something to behold. Teige was serving exceptionally well and we had chances in that first game but somehow they broke a similar pattern occured throughout the set which they took 6-2. Undeterred we fought hard in the next set. There was one game with the opposition serving that went to at least 15 deuces which we eventually broke. At 5-5 we were looking good but they broke again and held to win the second set 7-5.

On the other court Tony and Luke were both making their A team debut and boy what a fight they put up. Looking across I saw some excellent play from both, with Luke's fantastic ground strokes and Tony's awesome serve and volleying. However the class in opposition again showed and both sets went to Woking.

So all change, but it was a similar story Bagshot fought so hard and looked to be playing some of the best tennis I have witnessed from all, but ultimately Woking were just too experienced.
